Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Dubai

Klaus Ranner hails from the Bavarian city of Augsburg, home of playwright Bertolt Brecht, the Diesel engine and the Messerschmidt airplanes.There he completed high school for modern languages in 1971. After military service in signal intelligence he studied law at Augsburg and later Tübingen universities. At the latter he received his law degree in 1978. A year of internship at a High Court preceded his entry into the senior foreign service of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1980, starting with two years studies at the Foreign Office’s Diplomatic Academy in Bonn.

His foreign assignments include Warsaw (deputy head of legal and consular department), Buenos Aires (press spokesperson), Tehran (head of economic and commercial department), Stettin (Consul General), Bombay (Consul General) and Miami (Consul General). In between these assignments he pursued his career at the Foreign Office’s headquarters in Bonn and after Germany’s unification in Berlin, in the cultural, political, economic and European departments, the most recent position held by him at head office being minister counsellor and director of a task force for external business promotion. His private business experience dates from working with Siemens Transportation Systems as head of their co-operations unit.

Klaus Ranner is married to Barbara Zesewitz, a foreign service colleague, and has three grown-up children. Apart from his native German and some mid-Atlanic style English he speaks fluent Polish and some Spanish and French.

He took up his post as consul general of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Emirates of Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al Quwain with office in Dubai on August 10th, 2010.
